Paul Lee, MD
Senior Scientific Advisor
In addition to his duties as the Senior Scientific Advisor at SIDMAP, Dr. Lee is currently a Professor of Pediatrics at UCLA, the Director of the Stable Isotope Research Laboratory at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, the Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Pediatrics, and the acting Division Chief in the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley with a bachelors degree in Biochemistry in 1966, Dr. Lee went on to study medicine at Stanford University, and ultimately completed his pediatric internship and residency at Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital and USC-LAC Medical Center in Los Angeles, respectively. In 1976, he completed a two-year Fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology at UCLA and became an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University. In 1982, he received his MBA with honors from California State University, Northridge.
Dr. Lee received his initial training in mass spectrometry in 1978, from Dr. Daniel Knapp during a NIH NCRR fellowship. Dr. Lee is a pioneer in developing the use of the least squares approach to the quantitation of stable isotopes in mass spectrometry. The method was later adopted for mass isotopomer distribution analysis. In collaboration with Dr. Joseph Katz, Dr. Lee published extensively on the use of mass and positional mass isotopomer to trace metabolic pathways, which has evolved into the field of metabolomics as we know it today. From 1993-1996, Dr. Lee was a member of the Metabolism Study Section of the Scientific Review Branch of the NIH. Dr. Lee has received numerous grants and fellowships, has published many seminal articles on the use of stable isotopes in metabolic research, and continues to serve on more than a dozen committees and boards within the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center community. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and regarded as an expert in the field of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes.
